Charles Johnson of Garden Valley Indicted for Child Porn

An El Dorado County man was indicted this week on suspicion of receiving and possessing child pornography. United States Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced today that a federal grand jury returned a two-count indictment charging CHARLES DOUGLAS JOHNSON, 45, formerly of Garden Valley, Calif., with receipt and possession of child pornography.

A federal grand jury returned the two-count indictment against Charles Douglas Johnson, 45, of Garden Valley, which alleges that between April 12, 2007, and June 18, 2007, Johnson received "visual depictions of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct," states a news release by U.S. Attorney McGregor W. Scott's office.

This case is the product of an investigation by the Folsom Police Department and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department.  The case was investigated as part of Project Safe Childhood, a U.S. Department of Justice initiative formed to increase federal prosecution of violent sexual predators of children and to decrease the number of Internet crimes against children, including child pornography trafficking,

In Placerville Today, Schwarzenegger Hammers Lawmakers on Budget

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger calls for the legislature to vote on his budget compromise plan by dramatizing hardships faced by hospitals, schools and public safety agencies during a press conference at Marshall Medical Center in Placerville Wednesday, September 3, 2008. An impatient Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger ripped Democratic and Republican lawmakers today for collecting per diem checks, vacationing at political conventions and refusing to leave their "ideological corners" as California's budget stalemate is causing "severe consequences" for education, health and public safety.

"I think it is very important for the California people to know that while the state is 2 1/2 months late on a budget, and while there are severe consequences...to education and health care and hospitals and law enforcement and firefighting, there are absolutely no consequences for the legislators," Schwarzenegger said in an appearance at Marshall Medical Center in Placerville. "Absolutely none."

W.E.T. River Trips' Guides Rescue Sheriff Deputies

While finishing up a Middle Fork American trip at the portage around Rucka-Chucky Falls, Wolf, LilAlex, and AznC were made an offer they couldn't refuse. A group of Sheriff Deputies approached the W.E.T. River Trips' guides for some help. It seems that the sheriff's rental raft for a fishing trip had somehow made its way over the Falls and became stuck half way through the final drop. The Deputies raft had been stuck there for over one day.

Being the adventuresome lads that W.E.T. guides are... the guides finished the commercial rafting trip with the clients first. Then, the guides came back to Rucka-Chucky Falls armed with another raft and plenty of ropes... a "deal" was struck with

Robert Laurie of Camino is Delegate at Republican National Convention

California delegate Bob Laurie of Camino attends the Republican National Convention in St. Paul on Tuesday. It's a trip more than eight years in the making for Laurie, who first volunteered on John McCain's 2000 primary campaign. Photos by BRIAN BAER / bbaer@sacbee.com

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Robert Laurie has attended a national political convention before, but this was the first time he didn't sneak in by carrying boxes and skulking up to the rafters.

Laurie, 62, saw his only other convention as a politically curious 14-year-old in Los Angeles, a Democratic event to nominate President Kennedy.

Nearly five decades later, he is fulfilling his lifelong interest in American government this week as a delegate for John McCain.

Venus, Our Sister Planet

Venus, named after the Roman goddess of Love, is the second planet in our solar system, Venus orbits the Sun every 224.7 Earth days. It is the brightest natural object in the sky, except for the Sun and the Moon. Venus is also referred to as the Morning Star and the Evening Star because it reaches its maximum brightness shortly before sunrise or shortly after sunset. It is always dazzling. At its brightest, Venus can cast shadows on Earth and if you know where to look, it is even bright enough to be seen in full daylight.

Remembering Benjamin Bakst - One Year Later

This is a movie dedicated to the memory of my brother Ben. On March 13, 2007 he was in a head on collision in Placerville, CA with someone who was driving too fast and talking on a cell phone while she was driving. His Pathfinder rolled into a ditch and he sustained a head injury. After going to the doctor, they concluded that he had sustained a concussion but was otherwise in good health. His behavior become increasingly unpredictable and bizarre and then after a scuffle with law enforcement on March 21, 2007 he ended up in jail. This was NOT my brother. Healthy Ben would never have done something like this.

Thomas Porter Raley - A Placerville Original

When Thomas Porter Raley set his sights on California in the mid-1930s, he was confident that he, like others nearly a century before, would strike gold. Indeed golden opportunities were waiting for the young man with stars in his eyes and hard work a vital part of his family ethic.

Those who knew him are quick to say that Tom Raley, the 13th of 14 children born to Nancy Jane and Reglus Raley, had a gift for brash optimism. "Nothing is impossible" could have been the motto of this tall, red-haired lad from Lead Hill, Arkansas.

Hop Harvest on Jordan Family Farms

Yesterday I was on hand to help finish the first-ever hop harvest on Jordan Family Farms, and I am happy I was there. The farm is truly a family operation that mostly sells mandarins, but also has various fruit trees spattered around their property. Scott is the owner and is passionate about his farm, his family and his community - people like this you can't help but hope for the best. Joining us yesterday was Brian from Auburn Alehouse, Steve from Placerville Brewing Co., Brian from River City Brewing, Mike and Mark from Pacific Brew News, members of AAH's Mug Club and a few homebrewers from the region hoping to get some fresh hops of their own to take home. It was a good day.

Little Cowgirl Sela

Today we took the kids to Apple Hill in Placerville.

It is a group of several apple farms that have banded together to encourage tourism. At the first stop Sela spotted a cutout of a cow.

She said to me, "Mama. I like cows very much."
Me, "Really? Why do you like cows, Ci?"
Ci, "Because I like cow milk!"
